Playing the Cards You’re Dealt

In an interview, a candidate was asked “what are you most proud of.” The candidate responded, “playing the cards I was dealt.” This candidate had been limited to a career to one mid-sized city.

He explained how he made a career in a limited geographic area. Beginning in a career outside of healthcare, he successfully applied transferable skills and making the leap to healthcare. This was no small feat because he had almost no contacts within healthcare. At one point, he thought that he might have to take a salary and position cut in order to switch to the healthcare industry.

He devised a well thought out career strategy, sales pitch, and network of contacts. This took time. Highlighting his core competency - finance, a group of physicians recognized his potential value to their medical group leading to his first job in the healthcare industry. Over the next ten years, he navigated the breadth of healthcare moving from practice management to hospital revenue cycle, business development, and eventually to hospital operations. Each successive position advanced his career all within the same city.

In the last few years, he has been approached with new job opportunities as a result of building a solid track record and professional contacts.

Create Your Own Career Opportunities:

- Play the cards you’re dealt to the best of your ability

- Look for future opportunities and be willing to play the margins

- Continuously network with a wide variety of people
